The Municipality of Kamiros took its name from the ancient Rhodian city. The remains of the city were discovered in the 19th century and they enchant the visitor by revealing the power and civilization of the ancient people during that period. Kamiros was one of the three big ancient cities of Rhodos and came to its peak in the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. due to its develped agricultural economy.
Today's municipality is based on agriculture and tourism. In Kamiros there are some of the most important and interesting sites of the island.
From the villages of the northern coastline the most important one is Soroni a lively town with a very big beach. Very close is the Monastery of Agios Soulas, known for its festivities in July. Further to the south is Fanes with its picturesque fishing port while from Kalavarda the road leads to Salako a traditional village with rich vegetation and many springs.
From there one reaches to Profitis Ilias with its old hotels in the woods and the little church of the Saint (Aghios) on top of the mountain. Perched on the mountain's slopes are a line of little villages: Eleousa, an agricultural village with beautiful houses and a monastery, Platania with lots of forests surrounding it, Apollonas, a traditional village with a laographical museum. Lastly, in Dimylia one can visit the byzantine little church of Saint Nicolas Fountouklis and admire the beautiful frescoes of the 15th century.
